Winter is Here – Be Prepared for Cold Weather

And while the holiday season is a fun time for getting together with friends and family, the holiday is also the start of winter. The weather is getting colder and we want to remind you to be prepared for cold weather and extreme weather events. Spend a few moments now to double check your emergency winter car kit. Be prepared for all weather conditions. As we learned from Atlanta’s “snowpocalypse” a few years back, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Be prepared for winter emergencies like Snowpocolyps.

What to Pack in Your Winter Safety Kit

During the winter season there are many items that could prove to be handy in an unfortunate weather-related situation or accident that causes you to be exposed to extreme temperatures.

A basic first-aid kit is the most important item to keep in your car. Also, keep a warm blanket, or two, in your trunk in case you become stranded and have to wait for assistance in cold weather.

Consider packing a few non-perishable food items (breakfast bars, snacks, etc), and bottled water. Pack enough for all the people that would typically travel in your vehicle, enough to hold you over for up to 24 hours.

Some other useful items to add to your kit:

  • A multi-purpose utility tool, such as a pocket knife
  • A windshield ice scraper
  • An LED flashlight with spare batteries
  • And a bag of cat litter

Yes – cat litter is a great, lightweight alternative to sand or salt and can be used to free your car from snow or icy patches.
